The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) revealed their latest Small Business Economic Trends report, often referred to as the Optimism Index. The report shows that the economic sentiment among small business owners deteriorated in August despite recent improvements.
“The mood on Main Street worsened in August, despite last month’s gains,” stated Bill Dunkelberg, NFIB's chief economist. He elaborated on the persistent challenge of high inflation facing business owners, leading to a decline in sales expectations and increased cost pressures. Dunkelberg noted, “Uncertainty among small business owners continues to rise as expectations for future business conditions worsen.”
The report highlights include a significant decrease in profit trends, with figures showing a net negative 37% (seasonally adjusted), marking the lowest point since March 2010. Inflation remains a pressing issue for 24% of business owners, slightly down from July, while expectations for future sales volumes have also dropped, with a net negative 18% prediction for higher real sales volumes.
Other notable insights from the report include a plan by a seasonally adjusted net 20% of owners to increase compensation in the upcoming three months, showing a slight rise from the previous month.
In an industry-specific Small Business Optimism report released last week, it was reported that 70% of all small business owners experienced some level of supply chain disruption, ranging from significant to mild.
The NFIB’s monthly report serves as an essential gauge for the small business economy in the United States, contributing to policy discussions at various levels of government. The typical NFIB member reports annual gross sales of approximately $500,000 and employs between one and nine people.
