(Anchorage, AK) – Alaska State Parks has two new public use cabins in the Kodiak area, one near Long Lake at Woody Island State Recreation Site and another near Lake Rose Tead at Pasagshak River State Recreation Site. The Tangirnami Cabin, meaning “at Woody Island” in Alutiiq and the Pasersaq Cabin, meaning “Pasagshak” in Alutiiq are names selected by the Citizens Advisory Board in consultation with local Alaska Native tribes and the Alutiiq Museum.
The Pasersaq cabin is available for reservations at: www.alaskastateparks.reserveamerica.com and is $55 per night. The Tangernami cabin has some final touches needed before it is available; social media posts will notify when it is available.
Both 14’x16’ log cabins have a loft, woodstove, picnic table, fire ring, and a nearby outhouse – and were built using Alaska-milled spruce logs. The materials to build the cabin and outhouse at Woody Island State Recreation Site were donated by the non-profit Friends of Kodiak State Parks. Park user fees paid for construction which was completed by a local contractor. Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation worked with regional staff, the local Citizens’ Advisory Board, and park management plans to strategically select the locations for these cabins. Both locations are far enough from the City of Kodiak to increase overnight recreational access to the area, and close enough to allow easier access than the Shuyak and Afognak Island State Park public use cabins.
“Public use cabins are in increasingly high demand by Alaskans and visitors, especially in more accessible locations, and these will expand outdoor recreation opportunities into the shoulder seasons when Kodiak’s wet weather makes tent camping a little less enjoyable,” said Southwest Region Park Superintendent Ben Shryock. “Hiking, hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, kayaking, and other types of outdoor recreation are popular in both the Pasagshak and Woody Island areas. These new public use cabins will serve the public and provide increased access for these recreational pursuits.”
Alaska State Parks will be holding an open house at the Pasersaq Public Use Cabin at the Pasagshak River State Recreation Site in spring of 2023. Details will be forthcoming. More information about the cabins can be found at AlaskaStateParks.org → Public Use Cabins.
