After 25 years of service Colonel Doug Massie to Retire
May 25, 2022 (Anchorage, AK)— Alaska Wildlife Trooper Colonel Doug Massie announced his retirement from the Alaska Department of Public Safety effective May 31, 2022. Massie served Alaskans as an Alaska Wildlife Trooper since 1997; he was appointed Director of the Alaska Wildlife Troopers in December 2018 where he has since led 138 commissioned and civilian employees in accomplishing the division’s mission of protecting Alaska's natural resources through the enforcement of wildlife statutes and regulations.
"Colonel Massie has served Alaskans with loyalty, compassion, integrity, and courage over his storied career in the Alaska Wildlife Troopers. I have worked with Doug throughout our careers and know how dedicated he is to the job and our mission," said Alaska Department of Public Safety Commissioner James Cockrell. "Under Doug’s leadership the Alaska Wildlife Troopers have thrived and carried out their uniquely Alaskan mission of protecting Alaska’s fisheries and wildlife resources. We will certainly miss Doug but wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement."
Over his 25-year career Colonel Massie served as a wildlife investigator, field training officer, medium class vessel operator, fixed wing pilot, and as a post supervisor. He was awarded commendations for Meritorious Service and named the 2017 Supervisor of the Year for the Alaska Wildlife Troopers.
“For 25 years I have had the tremendous honor and privilege of working in the Department of Public Safety and serving the people of our great state in the finest law enforcement agency in the World,” said Colonel Doug Massie, Director of the Alaska Wildlife Troopers. “I am proud of the accomplishments that the Alaska Wildlife Troopers have made over the last three and a half years, including increased and enhanced enforcement efforts statewide, adding three new Wildlife Trooper positions in Rural Alaska, and the recapitalization and much needed maintenance of the vessel and off-highway vehicle fleet. I have great confidence in the next generation of AWT leadership and know that they will continue the legacy of excellence that our agency is known for.”
Alaska Wildlife Trooper Major Steve Adams will serve as acting director of the Alaska Wildlife Troopers until a permanent appointment is made.
