The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) has opened a new roadway near Ketchikan, providing improved access for the local community. The project features 7.29 miles of new single-lane gravel road, 14 feet wide with intervisible turnouts.

The new route starts at the gate near the end of White River Road, extends along the northern end of George Inlet, and connects to the U.S. Forest Service’s Shelter Cove Road system near Salt Creek. This connection now allows roadway travel to Shelter Cove and Carroll Inlet.

DOT&PF recommends travelers check current road conditions at 511.alaska.gov or by calling 511 before using Shelter Cove Road.

The department manages an extensive transportation network in Alaska, including 237 airports, nine ferries serving 35 communities over 3,500 marine miles, more than 5,600 miles of highway, and 839 public facilities statewide. According to DOT&PF, its mission is to “Keep Alaska Moving.”
