U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan announced on May 12 the United States Marine Corps’ new “Campaign–Alaska” initiative, which aims to expand the Corps’ operational capabilities in the Arctic region. The announcement was made at the University of Alaska Fairbanks alongside Lieutenant General Roberta L. Shea, commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command and U.S. Marine Corps Forces North.

The initiative is significant as it highlights Alaska’s strategic role for military operations, particularly given its geography and proximity to both the Arctic and Indo-Pacific regions. This move is part of a broader effort to strengthen homeland defense, improve readiness for Arctic conditions, and enhance cooperation with allies.

According to reporting from Alaska’s News Source and the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, Campaign–Alaska includes two major components: bringing Marines to Alaska for specialized Arctic training through Marine Rotational Force–Alaska, and establishing a persistent presence at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson via a Supporting Arms Liaison Team from 6th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (6th ANGLICO). Lt. Gen. Shea said that “Marine Rotational Force–Alaska will take advantage of Alaska’s unmatched training environment, ranges, command and control structure, and joint partners to strengthen homeland defense, Arctic readiness, deterrence, and interoperability with allies.” She also described the new 6th ANGLICO detachment as providing “a vital Marine Corps capability” through some of the top Joint Terminal Attack Controllers.

Sullivan said this development marks another step in what he called “a historic military buildup in our state.” He referenced other recent investments such as a multi-million dollar fighter jet simulation center at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER), a $7 billion recapitalization effort at JBER itself, upgrades at Eielson Air Force Base and Fort Wainwright, expansion of the 11th Airborne Division, as well as improvements in missile defense systems at Fort Greely and Clear Space Force Station.

The launch of Campaign–Alaska follows ongoing military growth in Alaska that includes infrastructure for fifth-generation fighter jets, expanded Coast Guard activities, missile defense enhancements, and renewed recognition of Alaska’s importance within national security planning.

Sullivan has represented Alaska in the U.S. Senate; he served on committees including Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs; completed a 30-year career in the Marine Corps retiring as a colonel; assisted residents with federal issues; offered service academy nominations; supported Alaskans with federal agency matters; and maintained offices across multiple Alaskan cities along with Washington D.C., according to the official website.
