Sen. Dan Sullivan recognized Olivia Klupar of Skagway as his “Alaskan of the Week” on March 13 during remarks delivered on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Klupar, cofounder of Voyij, was honored for her work connecting Alaska’s small businesses, artists, and tour operators with visitors and consumers worldwide through a technology platform.
The recognition highlights the importance of local entrepreneurship and tourism to Alaska’s economy. According to Sullivan, Klupar’s efforts have helped showcase Alaska-made goods and authentic Native art while supporting local businesses and strengthening the state’s tourism sector.
Sullivan described how Voyij played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic by helping businesses pivot to online sales when cruise tourism stopped. He said that this provided a critical lifeline to many entrepreneurs and artists who lost revenue due to travel restrictions. “Tourism isn’t just about people coming to Alaska–it’s about how we take care of our communities and share who we are,” Klupar said in remarks quoted by Sullivan.
Klupar grew up in Skagway in a family deeply involved in local business, including operating a bed-and-breakfast, restaurant, and art gallery. After studying at Boston College and working in New York City, she returned home to cofound Voyij with her brother Greg. The platform now partners with around 400 Alaska businesses across more than 65 communities, offering over 20,000 Alaskan-made goods and experiences.
Sullivan also discussed his legislative work supporting Alaska Native artists through measures like the ARTIST Act, which clarifies protections for those crafting walrus ivory art. He praised Klupar for her creativity and dedication: “So, Olivia, thank you for your great work, for showcasing and supporting Alaska’s economy… I want to thank you again for all you are doing and… congratulate you on this very prestigious award.”
Sullivan serves as a Republican U.S. senator representing Alaska according to the official website. His public service extends across Washington D.C. and Alaska with offices supporting constituents on federal matters according to the official website.
