Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) raised concerns about President Joe Biden’s recent executive orders to address climate change. She said they will cost jobs.
“Destroying jobs—America’s resource industry—unnecessarily cedes power and opportunity to foreign countries to take over development in a less responsible and less environmentally sound manner,” Murkowski wrote on Twitter.
In a recent Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing to consider the nomination of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh to be secretary of labor, the senator expressed her concern on the matter.
She commented that there is a need to “look critically” about the energy jobs that are lost, and consider thinking “about our critical minerals.” She said it is the basic resources that allow the country to be independent.
“We need to remember that there are certain parts of the country where you would need to continue to access these base resources,” Murkowski said. “So what we would want to be able to do is do that in a way that harnesses strong technology that allows us to do this with reduced emissions.”
Aware of the fact that there may be changes that should take place, the senator also underscored the need to secure fair work opportunities.
“But don’t kill the jobs. Don’t send the jobs overseas where the environmental practices are much less responsible, where labor practices are clearly less responsible.”
