The McCarthy Road in Fairbanks, Alaska, is now open for public travel. The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) has begun routine maintenance on the road, which will continue until October 15. Since early March, the department’s maintenance crews have been active with snow removal and clearing blocked culverts to ensure the roadway is safe for drivers.
Current conditions on McCarthy Road are labeled as fair to difficult due to features like soft shoulders and wet, uneven surfaces. Consequently, an advisory speed limit of 35 miles per hour is recommended for all vehicles. Drivers should remain vigilant for maintenance crews operating throughout the year. Travelers are advised to prepare comprehensively for remote travel by packing essentials such as food and water, first aid kits, seasonally appropriate clothing, and spare tires. It is important to note that services such as gas stations, cell coverage, and camping facilities are not available on this road.
Seasonal weight restrictions are also being enforced. Travelers can access the latest road conditions and restrictions by visiting 511.alaska.gov or calling 511 before traveling on the Taylor Highway.
