Governor Mike Dunleavy proclaimed on May 1 that May 2026 will be recognized as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Alaska.
The proclamation highlights the importance of honoring the values, languages, beliefs, and traditions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Alaska. It notes that these communities have contributed to the state’s cultural diversity and social fabric through dedication to family, community service, hard work, military service, and public sector involvement.
Dunleavy’s statement also draws attention to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Cultural Flag Day on May 30, which commemorates historical milestones such as the first raising of the American flag on Tutuila Island in American Samoa in April 1900; the arrival of Japanese immigrants to the United States in May 1843; Chinese workers’ role in building the transcontinental railroad completed in May 1869; and Filipino seamen arriving in Alaska in 1788 who later helped lay underwater communication cables connecting Southeastern Alaska with Seattle. “Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is an occasion to recognize and appreciate the history, culture, and achievements of Alaska’s Asian and Pacific Islander Americans,” Dunleavy said.
According to the official website, the Office of the Governor of Alaska has recognized community events through annual gatherings and proclamations honoring veterans, first responders, and cultural traditions. The office has also focused on restoring trust in government while promoting business opportunities throughout Alaska according to its official site.
Dunleavy has served as governor since his election as Alaska’s twelfth governor in 2018 with reelection following in 2022 according to information from his office. The Office exercises authority across all regions while maintaining a presence in Washington D.C. for advocacy efforts as reported by its official website.
Other actions taken by Dunleavy’s administration include advancing economic development through agreements for infrastructure permitting improvements along with issuing orders for government efficiency according to its official website. The office also provides services such as assistance with state agency matters, handling proclamation requests like this one recognizing heritage month observances, as well as appointments to boards or commissions as described by its official site.
