Governor Mike Dunleavy proclaimed on May 10 that the date will be recognized as Alaska Mining Day in 2026. The proclamation highlights the role of mining in Alaska’s economy and history, noting its contribution to both state development and national security.

The observance is intended to recognize individuals who have contributed to developing and settling Alaska, as well as those currently working in the mining industry. The proclamation states that “Alaska’s expansive landscapes are known to contain tremendous deposits of gold, silver, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gravel, rare earth minerals, and other critical and strategic minerals that are an essential component of our Nation’s economy and security.” It further notes that “the development of these minerals and other natural resources laid the groundwork for the establishment of our State.”

Dunleavy’s statement points out that large-producing mines generate billions in annual gross mineral production for Alaska while providing full-time employment to thousands of residents. He said advanced exploration projects hold promise for more economic growth: “Alaska is home to advanced exploration projects that hold the promise of even more economic growth…as reflected in the Fraser Institute’s 2024 ranking of Alaska as the third most attractive jurisdiction for global mineral investment.” Mining also provides high-wage jobs and capital investment while supporting public services through taxes.

As part of recognizing community contributions across various sectors—including veterans and first responders—the Office of the Governor regularly issues proclamations honoring key events or industries according to the official website. The office has focused on restoring trust in government while promoting business opportunities throughout Alaska. Dunleavy has served as governor since his election in 2018 and reelection in 2022.

The proclamation encourages all Alaskans “to recognize the importance of mining in the founding and early development of Alaska’s history,” urging appreciation for ongoing efforts within this sector.
