Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has officially proclaimed January 9, 2026, as Alaska Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. The proclamation recognizes the work and dedication of law enforcement officers across the state.

The document states: “Protecting the safety and wellbeing of all Alaskans is the first priority and highest calling of the State of Alaska, and it is important that all citizens know and understand the duties and responsibilities of law enforcement officers and agencies.”

It continues: “We honor and appreciate the law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day to enforce the rule of law, preserve the values we hold dear, and protect our families and communities.”

The proclamation also highlights the demands placed on officers: “The mission of law enforcement requires officers to act courageously and quickly, to make effective decisions while under immense pressure from imminent threats, to run toward danger instead of away, and to act with empathy and compassion while serving others in their greatest time of need.”

Governor Dunleavy noted the specific challenges faced by Alaska’s law enforcement personnel: “Alaska’s law enforcement officers are faced with the unique challenges of our vast landscape and harsh environments, and regularly overcome these obstacles in selfless service of people all across Alaska.”

He added appreciation for various groups within Alaska’s public safety sector: “The State of Alaska and its citizens are honored to stand by the law enforcement professionals who are our everyday heroes, including Alaska’s local police forces, the Alaska State Troopers, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Park Rangers, Village Public Safety Officers, and Correctional Officers, and offer them our wholehearted support and appreciation as they continue to dedicate themselves in service to our communities.”

Concluding his proclamation, Governor Dunleavy stated: “I…do hereby proclaim January 9, 2026, as: Alaska Law Enforcement Appreciation Day in Alaska and encourage all Alaskans to honor and show gratitude to law enforcement personnel and the role they play in preserving the health and safety of our communities in the Last Frontier.”

The Office of the Governor operates as part of Alaska’s executive branch overseeing public safety initiatives among other responsibilities. It manages resources statewide while supporting community events through annual proclamations such as this one. The office maintains a presence both across Alaska—in cities like Juneau, Anchorage, Fairbanks—and in Washington D.C., working to advance state interests. More information about its functions can be found at its official website.

Governor Dunleavy has served as Alaska’s governor since 2018 after being elected as the state’s twelfth governor; he was reelected in 2022. The governor’s office regularly issues proclamations recognizing community members including first responders.
