Governor Mike Dunleavy proclaimed May 8 as Child Care Provider Appreciation Day in Alaska, according to a May 8 statement. The proclamation recognizes the role of child care providers in supporting families and helping children develop into productive members of society.

The announcement highlights the importance of quality care and positive early experiences for Alaska’s children. The proclamation says, “children are Alaska’s most precious asset, and quality care, stimulating learning environments, and positive early experiences help prepare them for a bright and successful future.” It also acknowledges that while parents are primary caregivers, child care providers complement their efforts by guiding children through key developmental stages.

The document further states that child care providers support children’s cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and literary needs during critical brain development from birth through age six. Providers are described as creating safe learning environments and using teaching strategies tailored to different developmental stages. The proclamation notes that many young Alaskans receive care from licensed or approved facilities as well as certified military centers, tribally licensed programs, Head Start initiatives, and legally exempt providers.

Child care providers are called “a cornerstone of our State’s infrastructure” in the proclamation. Governor Dunleavy said he encourages all Alaskans to acknowledge the contributions made by these professionals across the state: “the commitment to providing high quality child care services represents an investment toward a better Alaska for all.” According to the official website, the Office of the Governor of Alaska recognizes community events through annual gatherings and proclamations honoring various groups such as veterans and first responders.

Dunleavy has served as Alaska’s governor since his election in 2018 and reelection in 2022; his administration focuses on restoring trust in government while promoting business opportunities throughout the state. The governor’s office maintains authority statewide with an additional office in Washington D.C., provides services including aid with agency issues or proclamations requests, advances economic development via agreements on infrastructure permitting or regulatory changes—all according to information available from the official website.
