Governor Mike Dunleavy and First Lady Rose Dunleavy have expressed condolences following the death of former Alaska Representative Brenda Itta-Lee.
Brenda Itta-Lee made history in 1975 as the first Alaska Native woman to serve in the Alaska House of Representatives. After her time in office, she continued her public service by joining the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation Board of Directors and serving on the North Slope Borough Assembly. She also played a key role in advocating for the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971.
“Alaska has lost a true pioneer,” said Governor Dunleavy. “Mrs. Itta-Lee left her mark on so many of the most consequential and important issues facing Alaska Natives and the entire state that her name is forever etched in our state’s history. Her legacy will serve as an inspiration for future leaders across Alaska.”
In honor of Brenda Itta-Lee, Governor Dunleavy has ordered that both Alaska and United States flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on November 13, 2025.
