Governor Mike Dunleavy announced on May 14 the appointment of Stephen Cox as his new Counsel to the Governor. This follows the legislature’s decision not to confirm Cox as attorney general, despite his background in legal and public policy work and experience defending Alaska’s interests both locally and nationally.

Cox will advise Governor Dunleavy on a range of legal, regulatory, and constitutional matters that affect Alaska. The Office of the Governor of Alaska exercises authority across the state while maintaining an office in Washington, D.C., to advocate for Alaska’s interests, according to the official website.

Dunleavy also named Cori Mills acting attorney general for the Department of Law. Mills has worked with the department for 14 years and most recently served as deputy attorney general.

“Stephen Cox has a strong understanding of Alaska law and the challenges facing our state,” said Governor Dunleavy. “His experience, professionalism, and commitment to public service make him a valuable asset as Counsel to the Governor. I look forward to working with Stephen as we continue advancing policies that strengthen Alaska’s economy, uphold the rule of law, and serve the people of our state.”

As Counsel to the Governor, Cox will continue collaborating with executive branch departments on policy initiatives, legislation, and executive actions. “I am honored to serve Governor Dunleavy and the people of Alaska in this new role,” said Stephen Cox. “I look forward to continue supporting the administration’s efforts to promote responsible resource development, governance and opportunities for Alaskans across the state.”

The Office of the Governor has focused on restoring trust in government while promoting business opportunities throughout Alaska; it has advanced economic development through agreements for improved infrastructure permitting and issued orders aimed at government efficiency according to the official website.
