Bureau of Land Management issued the following announcement on Feb. 7.

The Bureau of Land Management announces the availability of the Record of Decision and Approved Haines Amendment to the Ring of Fire Resource Management Plan.

The amendment will guide future land management actions on approximately 317,000 acres of BLM-managed public lands in the Haines area. The decision increases outdoor recreation opportunities and enhances conservation stewardship. Haines is a premier destination for heli-skiing. The Glennallen Field Office issues special recreation permits annually for heli-skiing and the amendment allows for a graduated increase in landings throughout the life of the plan.

“This decision strikes a good balance between responsible development and environmental stewardship,” said BLM Alaska State Director Chad Padgett. “It gives us more flexibility to successfully manage the area’s important natural resources while protecting wildlife habitat and supports wonderful backcountry recreation opportunities.”

Throughout this planning process, the BLM worked with the State of Alaska, Haines and Skagway Boroughs, and neighboring Federal land management agencies, and consulted with Alaska Native organizations.

The Record of Decision and Approved Haines Amendment can be viewed on the BLM’s ePlanning website. A link to ePlanning can be found on the project web page at www.blm.gov/alaska/rof-haines-amendment. In addition, hard copies will be available for review at the following locations:
