The month of March 2026 has been designated as American Red Cross Month in Alaska by Governor Mike Dunleavy. The proclamation highlights the long-standing role of the American Red Cross as a major humanitarian organization and acknowledges its contributions to communities across the state.
Governor Dunleavy stated, “The American Red Cross is one of the Nation’s oldest and most recognized humanitarian organizations, and has long been a symbol of the compassion and selflessness that defines the American way of life.” He also noted that Alaskans have come to rely on the Red Cross for aid during disasters and crises.
The Red Cross’s focus on empowering individuals and families is outlined through four main steps: making a plan, building a kit, getting trained, and volunteering. Training courses offered by the organization in areas such as first aid, CPR, lifesaving skills, and water safety are intended to prepare residents for emergencies when professional medical help may not be available.
In 2025, more than 600 volunteers with the Red Cross of Alaska responded to 190 disaster events statewide. These volunteers supported over 800 households in more than 30 communities. Governor Dunleavy recognized these efforts by saying, “Alaskans gratefully welcome the efforts of the American Red Cross, whose lifesaving mission is powered by the dedication of volunteers, the generosity of donors, and partnerships with community organizations.”
This proclamation continues a tradition by Alaska’s governor’s office to recognize community contributions through official proclamations and annual gatherings honoring groups such as veterans and first responders (official website). The Office of the Governor provides services including proclamation requests for community events (official website).
Governor Dunleavy concluded his statement with an appeal: “I urge all Alaskans to support the American Red Cross and consider volunteering to assist with its noble humanitarian mission.”
Dunleavy has served as Alaska’s governor since his election in 2018 and reelection in 2022 (official website), maintaining priorities that include restoring trust in government while promoting economic development across Alaska (official website).
