U.S. Senators Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski, along with Congressman Nick Begich, all Republicans from Alaska, announced on Apr. 16 that the U.S. Coast Guard will homeport two additional icebreakers in Alaska. The announcement follows testimony from Admiral Kevin Lunday, commandant of the Coast Guard, who said the agency was considering homeporting up to four Arctic Security Cutters in Alaska as part of agreements with Finland and under the ICE Pact.

The move is significant for national security and economic development in Alaska as it aims to close what officials describe as America’s icebreaking gap with other nations. Funding for up to three new icebreakers was secured by the state’s congressional delegation through the Working Families Tax Cuts Act signed into law in July 2025.

Senator Dan Sullivan said, “Our leaders have talked for years about the national security imperative of closing America’s icebreaking gap with our adversaries and homeporting icebreakers where the ice is—which is Alaska. But we’re not just talking about these priorities anymore. We’re getting them done.” He also said that bringing at least three icebreakers to Alaska will enhance national security and create jobs: “These investments, including the announcement today, are not only good for our national security, they’re also great news for Alaska’s economy, hard-working families, and coastal communities. What an exciting day for Alaskans and for the whole country!”

Senator Lisa Murkowski said she has long advocated expanding America’s fleet of icebreakers: “Since my first days in Washington, I have been sounding the alarm about the need to recapitalize and expand our fleet of icebreakers. It feels good to say that we are finally beginning to realize that goal.” She added that this development marks a turning point in U.S. investment in Arctic capabilities: “This news marks a turning point in America’s investment in the Arctic and will allow us to reassert our influence in the region—enhancing maritime commerce…and ensuring our military can respond to emergencies in any environment.” Murkowski also credited former President Donald Trump for his commitment on this issue.

Congressman Nick Begich emphasized strategic importance: “Homeporting two new Arctic Security Cutters in Alaska will strengthen America’s position in an increasingly strategic and contested Arctic…Alaska is the nation’s Arctic gateway…As global competition intensifies…we cannot afford to fall behind.” He described these investments as essential for readiness.

According to Sullivan’s official website, he represented Alaska residents on federal issues—including service academy nominations—and completed a 30-year career with retirement as a Marine Corps colonel. Sullivan served on committees such as Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs; he maintained offices across several Alaskan cities plus Washington D.C.; supported residents dealing with federal agencies; served previously as state Attorney General focusing on rights protection; ran on platforms prioritizing national security; public safety; responsible resource management; and serves currently on multiple Senate committees.

Broader implications include significant funding allocated since 2015—about $1.408 billion—for infrastructure projects supporting Coast Guard assets across many Alaskan communities. Recent legislative actions secured $4.3 billion toward two Polar Security Cutters (with progress toward a third), $3.5 billion for three next-generation medium polar cutters (Arctic Security Cutters), $816 million for more than ten light/medium domestic cutters plus billions more across helicopters, aircrafts, fast response cutters (FRCs), offshore patrol cutters (OPCs) and supporting shoreside infrastructure.
