The Road to Tanana and Rampart Road in Fairbanks, Alaska, have been reopened for public travel, according to the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOPT&PF). Maintenance on these roads will be ongoing until October 1 after snow removal and thawing of culverts was conducted starting mid-March to restore them to good driving conditions.

The current conditions range from fair to difficult due to recently repaired washouts. A speed limit advisory of 35 miles per hour is in effect in light of these conditions.

Travelers are advised to be cautious of maintenance crews working along these roads throughout the year. They are also encouraged to prepare adequately for remote travel with necessary emergency supplies such as food, water, first aid kits, seasonally suitable clothing, and spare tires. It is important to note that services along these routes, such as gas stations, cell coverage, and campgrounds, are unavailable.

Seasonal weight restrictions apply and should be checked. For updated travel information, visitors are advised to check conditions on 511.alaska.gov or call 511 before traveling on the Taylor Highway.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities manages 237 airports, 9 ferries serving 35 communities along 3,500 marine miles, over 5,600 miles of highway, and 839 public facilities throughout Alaska. The department’s mission is to “Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure.”
