Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has proclaimed February 2026 as Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month in the state. The proclamation highlights the importance of ensuring all Alaskans have healthy and safe relationships, free from abuse.
Governor Dunleavy stated, “All Alaskans deserve healthy and safe relationships, free from abuse; and it is essential to provide our youth with education about healthy relationships, as well as safe shelter and assistance for those experiencing abuse.” He described dating violence as a pattern of behavior that may involve physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, or other forms of abusive conduct intended to harm or control someone in an intimate relationship.
The statement also addresses the serious consequences of dating violence. According to the governor’s office, such violence can cause long-term pain and increase risks for substance abuse, depression, suicide, poor academic performance, engagement in risky behaviors, and future exposure to partner abuse in adulthood.
Referencing data from the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the proclamation noted that among Alaska high school students who dated or went out with someone in the past year, 15 percent of females and five percent of males reported experiencing sexual dating violence at least once during that period.
Governor Dunleavy emphasized that sexual and intimate partner violence remains a significant public health issue in Alaska. He called for efforts to equip young people with knowledge and resources to recognize and prevent abuse within relationships.
“I…encourage all Alaskans to take a proactive role in ending dating violence by seeking out education on healthy relationships and fostering safe and healthy environments for all individuals in every community,” said Governor Dunleavy.
The proclamation was signed on February 1, 2026.
