The Alaska International Airport System (AIAS) has reported growth in several areas during the first half of 2025. Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) experienced an increase of 3,400 passengers, which was attributed to its popularity as a winter travel destination and a site for viewing the northern lights.

Airlines have expanded their services at both Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) and FAI. WestJet launched its first direct service between ANC and Calgary. Alaska Airlines added direct flights from ANC to Sacramento and from FAI to Portland. Delta Air Lines expanded its Los Angeles service and introduced a year-round route to Atlanta. United Airlines began daily summer flights from FAI to Denver. Additionally, FAI received a Small Community Air Service Development Program grant aimed at supporting seasonal service to Dallas.

Cargo operations across AIAS increased by 3%, reinforcing the airport system’s status as an important global logistics center. Partnerships with carriers such as Nippon Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Cargojet, and WestJet continue through collaborative initiatives including biannual cargo carrier meetings.

Commercial development is progressing with new concessions, tenant agreements, and construction projects underway at both airports. Notable developments include FedEx’s $42 million domestic sort facility at ANC and expanded food and beverage options for travelers. The airport system is also updating key planning documents such as the ANC Master Plan Update, Part 150 Noise Study, and Sustainability Study.

“The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities oversees 237 airports, 9 ferries serving 35 communities along 3,500 marine miles, over 5,600 miles of highway and 839 public facilities throughout the state of Alaska,” according to the department. “The mission of the department is to ‘Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure.’”

The AIAS consists of ANC, Lake Hood Seaplane Base, and FAI. Its stated goal is delivering cargo and passenger services that connect Alaskan communities with destinations worldwide while supporting tourism and economic growth.
