Governor Mike Dunleavy has declared May 2025 as Alaska Bike Month, acknowledging the significance of cycling in transportation, recreation, and public health. The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is focusing on improving safety and access for cyclists through infrastructure investments.

“Bike Month is about more than recreation—it’s about creating a transportation system that reflects the way Alaskans live,” stated DOT&PF Commissioner Ryan Anderson. The department aims to provide safer routes for commuting and leisure activities across both rural and urban areas.

In collaboration with the Alaska Department of Health, DOT&PF is promoting awareness about biking’s health benefits and road safety responsibilities. Pedestrians and cyclists are considered vulnerable users in Alaska’s transport network. Encouraging safe practices like slowing near crosswalks and avoiding phone use can help prevent accidents.

A notable event during Bike Month is the dedication of a new bike path in Fairbanks on May 24. This path along Richardson Highway will be named the “Matt Glover Bike Path” to honor Matt Glover, a cyclist who died while commuting between North Pole and Fairbanks. The path enhances local safety and connectivity.

Following the dedication at 10 a.m., hosted by the Fairbanks Cycle Club near Fort Wainwright Visitor Center, there will be a community ride. Parking will be available at designated locations, though construction may affect access near Fort Wainwright.

DOT&PF continues to incorporate non-motorized facilities into highway projects, supporting its mission to provide safe infrastructure for all Alaskans.

The department manages extensive transport networks including airports, ferries serving numerous communities, highways, and public facilities throughout Alaska with its mission to “Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure.”
